A piece of jewelry is more than just a beautiful accessory and more than the sum of its parts. Jewelry, throughout history, has been used and built for many reasons including cultural storytelling and folktales as well as cherishing memories. Jewelry also serves as self-expression. You build jewelry authentically with your own idea of personal symbolism, shapes, materials, colors of stones and gems, lengths, and which parts of the body a specific piece is worn upon. It’s your own story.
Jewelry can also be a declaration of status and identification within a community such as a shaman, leader, warrior or hunter.
I find jewelry fascinating in its original form being used in cultural events as percussion + movement in ceremonial dance.
I personally witnessed unique and beautiful jewelry used in cultural sacred dance + movement in small villages and marveled at being able to witness their ancient traditions. We also can learn so much about a culture by studying its jewelry. Jewelry serves as a documentation of cultural and historical beliefs.
History, art, tradition and culture cannot help but be a big influence on adornment. Culture becomes embedded into this medium through every stitched or stamped symbol in fabric and every carved and engraved mark in metal, rock and bone.

Join me in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico for this week-long workshop. Through a series of gentle but energizing creative movements and meditations, you will be shifted into a creative space to build sacred personal jewelry. The focus will be to explore deeply in metal techniques, cold + hot connections, and exploring your own personal objects and their meaning.
During this week, we will worry less about the outcome of a perfect beautiful piece and will focus on the process. My goal is to offer a place of peaceful, sacred self-expression. You’ll also come away with a notebook full of ideas to alter and use in your future work.
Hacienda Mosaico is a beautiful art-filled space where you can spend hours honing your craft. The outdoor studio is available 24/7. There are many reasonably priced restaurants in the immediate neighborhood for dinners. In past years, students have dashed out to grab tacos and return to work late into the evening. An afternoon in the pool is ideal for the hot days.
Supplies: bring a selection of metal, found objects and stones that are personally significant to you and the wire and silver sheet you like to work with.
Tools: bring your nomadic metalsmithing kit. Be sure to bring your own butane torchhead. Pickle pot, LOS pot & butane will be provided. Review Alchemy of Soldering or Intentional Metalsmithing in advance of the workshop.
